A Seasonal Friend

One Saturday late afternoon I abducted my good friend John from his two lovely kids, Sam and Tati having his beautiful wife, Monette as my accomplice. We decided to hang out at Tiendesitas which is just across his place at Valle Verde. Carlo used to be my kaladkarin partner but he’s now in the states so I am grateful to have found a replacement right away. Although I must say that no body can ever replace such a good friend like Carlo in my heart—I miss you terribly bro! Naghihintay na sayo ang Wowowee!

Anyway, it’s always worthwhile each time I hang out with John. Yes, he maybe most of the time have the front of a serious guy but we still manage to balance and still make the occasion as interesting as it has always been in the past. He is normally philosophic type which I must I admit in this manner I can relate. We have laughs and more often, bull sessions! He’s the Boy Abunda of my life who always asks me to face the mirror for our reality check if that could help me describe our friendship.

We never run out of stories and opinions to share. I am the closest to him in our barkada but that doesn’t give me the advantage to make him my ally in times of trouble. Thus, being the closest to him, I am actually the least person he would side upon. He was never biased and this honestly annoys me at times but somehow made me admire him having that kind of attitude—he always wanted to be fair to all his friends except from me I must say. As much as he is the biggest supporter of my dreams, he is as well my great antagonist.

Well enough of the introduction. While sitting beside him at one of the bench with his cigarette, our conversation went to a seasonal kind of friend. Let me give a more precise definition of what we call seasonal friend:

Seasonal: adj, seezunul - occurring at or dependent on a particular season.
Friend: n. frend - a person you know well and regard with affection and trust.

Briefly, seasonal friend is the one who only remembers you when she needs something. Beep! Beep! They say that’s what friends are for. I guess a friend has a really wide definition and I really can’t just put into one sentence to describe one. I had friends..I still have a lot..and continuously having some. It’s true that friends just come and go but I am glad I have found few who stay. We may have met few people across but there will always be one kind of friend who will not only remember you when she needs a supporter of her emotions when she has problems but also remembers to check on you as well.

After a very long deliberation talking about this, we both agreed upon something. It is better to know any how that you’ve been the friend they thought they have when all else is gone. Well, who knows? Maybe I was been a seasonal friend too to someone else in the past or perhaps John as well but now all I know is that even far away or even busy having their own lives--I am keeping the gift of real friendship from those few people who are still there for me in all kind of season.
